Hey team,

We’re getting closer to February 2, and I’m thinking it’s time to register, while it’s still just $75 per person! According to Chris’s blog, nobody has offered up their services as Captain, so here’s the deal I’ll make – I’ll volunteer to be the team captain, if one or two others will volunteer to handle the van rentals.

That said – we still need a Team Name, and confirmation from everybody who said they were interested last month before I sign us up.

Joanna suggested a happy hour to plan some of this stuff out. Next Thursday (1/21)? Mark – I fully expect you to fly in from Louisiana for this (please bring me a king cake if you do). I know a bunch of us work uptown, and I believe some of us work or live near University area. So maybe Thomas Street Tavern? 6pm? I’m open to suggestions of another date/time/place. I’ll bring printouts of the different legs and we can start talking about what our assignments will be, so that we can plan our training appropriately.

Email me back to tell me:

1)That you are still definitely in for 200 MORE miles of awesomeness.

2)If you have any name suggestions, or can think of a more timely public scandal that we can use as inspiration. (Ryan – that’s specifically why I copied you.)

3) If next Thursday/6pm/Thomas Street works for you

4) If you can’t make it to Happy Hour, but have an opinion on which legs you want. http://palmetto200.com/course_13.html

Hope to hear from you all very soon!

Palmetto leg assignments

Its awfully quiet here. Please comment if you are reading this blog.

Anyway I had some time on my hand and thought I'd talk a bit about the Palmetto legs. I'm sure you have seen this before. Looks like they classify segments under 5miles easy, 5-7.5 Medium and above 7.5 Hard, except leg 19 (downhill?) and leg 34 which is hilly maybe.

Here is the Breakdown assuming 12 runners
Van 1
Runner Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Total
1 5.1 E 4.4 E 5.9 M 15.4
2 9.4 H 7.0 M 3.9 E 20.3
3 3.4 E 3.1 E 7.6 H 14.1
4 6.8 M 4.9 E 7.7 H 19.4
5 3.9 E 3.8 E 4.7 E 12.4
6 8.7 H 3.4 E 3.7 E 15.8
-----
97.4
Van2
1 3.2 E 7.7 M 7.3 M 18.2
2 4.2 E 5.6 M 4.9 E 14.7
3 4.6 E 4.9 E 2.9 E 12.4
4 10.1 H 6.9 M 6.9 H 23.9
5 3.7 E 5.6 M 6.3 M 15.6
6 7.7 H 6.2 M 8.1 H 22.0
-------
106.8

Has anyone read the rules to see if we have to follow a set rotation like the Blue Ridge. The Texas Independence Relay I ran last year allowed you to shuffle your rotation, only requirement being that the segments be reasonably evenly distributed and The runner running the most legs cannot have more than 1 more leg than the least. It had 40 legs for 12 runners, so maximum 4 could run no more than 4 legs each, and 8 had to run atleast 3 legs each. Our team had 9 runners, so I ran 4 and 4 of the faster guys ran 5 each.

Just a reminder, the deadline for the discounted rate for the Palmetto 200 is February 2nd. Does anyone want to be the team captain and get this going?

Training Thread

Would you guys like a training thread, with maybe some pointers from experienced runners like Bo and Chris on workouts and stuff specifically geared towards the legs we might be running (hilly vs real short runs).

Here is one training guide for a relay I intend to loosely follow, granted this is for a hilly race(Wasatch back relay, which is more similar to Blue Ridge than the Palmetto)

the -H is for Hills, I might do these on a treadmill. The days with multiple runs (with a / )are doubles/triples that you may opt to do as 1 long run, but I think it's a good idea to do atleast a couple of these doubles to get our legs used to running 2-3 times in a day. Any suggestions?

P.S I just can't get the formatting right, let me know if you want this as an excel sheet.

2009 Miles

on
I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but I added my 2009 miles up. Part of the year was measured by Nike+, and the other part by my Garmin Forerunner. The total came to 2,228. The real story for me, however, is that prior to 2009, I had not run a race since college X-C, 18 years ago. And then in '09 I ran a 5K with my daughter, a mountainous 10K, the Blue Ridge Relay, the Richmond Marathon, and then finally the Thunder Road Marathon.

I can't explain why I suddenly started racing again -- but I'm sure it had a lot to do with the people I met.

Here's to another great year of running.

And now it's time for my first run of the year.

Happy New Year!
